Meet Beckley Alt-Rockers Heavy-Set Paw-Paws

What are the Heavy-Set Paw-Paws? What’s it like making music in Beckley, West Virginia? And what does “Appalachian Stank” mean as a music genre? I sat down with the alt-rock group’s frontman Tyler Evans to get to the bottom of these questions and more.

Heavy-Set Paw-Paws released Nine Genies in the Family Room this past June, and you can keep up with the band on Facebook and Twitter. To hear more of their music, tune in to ‘A Change of Tune,’ airing Saturdays at 10pm EST on West Virginia Public Broadcasting.

Beckley officials are considering banning playing basketball on city streets following residents’ complaints.

Residents have complained that players refuse to yield to traffic.

The Register-Herald reports that Common Council revised a proposed ordinance banning street basketball on Tuesday. A public hearing and a second reading of the ordinance is set for July 14.

Basketball goals on city streets also would be banned. City attorney Bill File says the ordinance doesn’t apply to goals on private property.

Violators would face a $25 fine. Council reduced the fine from the original proposal’s $50.

Resident Judy Patterson says the council shouldn’t restrict basketball until the city maintains its parks. She says many city basketball courts aren’t properly lighting and fences are in disrepair.

Federal prosecutors are opposing former Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship’s request to go home to Las Vegas for Memorial Day.

A prosecution motion filed Tuesday in Beckley federal court says Blankenship owns homes in several states. But there’s little evidence of his ties to Las Vegas, other than his claiming residency there.

Blankenship’s attorneys asked U.S. District Judge Irene Berger last week to allow him to travel to Las Vegas to attend to personal matters, including a trip to a dentist.

Blankenship is charged with conspiring to violate safety standards at Upper Big Branch, a former Massey mine where an explosion killed 29 men in 2010. During his case, his travel is restricted to West Virginia, Pike County, Kentucky, and Washington, D.C. Other travel requires judicial approval.

Snow Removal Hampered in Beckley by Equipment Issues

Equipment problems are hampering Beckley’s efforts to dig out from more than 2 feet of snow.

Mayor Bill O’Brien tells The Register-Herald that crews are working around the clock to clear the city’s 535 streets. But five of the city’s 11 snow plows are broken down.

O’Brien says the plows are good for normal snow but the recent heavy, wet snow has strained them.

He also says many Board of Public Works employees haven’t been able to get to work, including a mechanic.

Beckley resident Allen Mahaffey tells the newspaper that he didn’t see a snow plow on his street for five days last week.

The air ambulance service says the new base in Beckley expands its coverage in the state.

The Beckley base’s Bell 206 L4 Long Ranger helicopter is equipped with autopilot and a glass cockpit. Air Evac Lifeteam president Seth Myers says in a news release that the service plans to outfit the rest of its fleet with autopilot and glass cockpits over the next two years.

Air Evac Lifeteam operates 116 bases in 15 states. The other West Virginia bases are located in Logan, Parkersburg, Summersville and Wetzel County.
