Officials Break Ground On A Less Congested Beckley

Construction is underway on the second phase of Raleigh County’s Beckley Z-Way project.

After decades of planning, construction is underway on the second phase of Raleigh County’s Beckley Z-Way project.

A crowd of government and transportation officials celebrated the groundbreaking Thursday of a long-awaited project designed to alleviate congestion in and around Beckley. When it’s completed, a wider, relocated U-S 19 will run from Shady Spring through Beaver and into Beckley.

The price tag for the whole project is $110 million, funded through the governor’s Roads to Prosperity program.

Raleigh County Commission President Greg Duckworth said the project will be transformative for the entire region.

“It’s not just the commitment to improving our infrastructure but the pathway to a brighter, more prosperous future for all of us,” Duckworth said.

Construction is expected to be completed by the spring of 2028.
