Crews have been working around the clock since Thursday’s train derailment in South Charleston.
The train was en route from Morristown, Indiana, to Rosehill, North Carolina, when 17 cars derailed a few minutes at approximately 9:49 a.m. Thursday, said a CSX spokesman.
“The primary focus right now is safely clearing and restoring the tracks so freight and passenger service can resume,” Austin Staton, director of media relations, said in a statement.
The speed at the time was just under 39 miles per hour.
The first goal is to get one of the two tracks involved opened for both freight and passenger service once again.
Crews also have to remove all the damaged trains from the scene and get the second track restored.
The other task ahead is taking care of the corn the train was carrying.
“The customer will decide what happens to the product that derailed, but it will be removed from the site,” Staton said.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
