If you’d like to help West Virginia shine a little more, the state Department of Environmental Protection wants to hear from you.
The DEP’s Make It Shine Program is recruiting volunteers for the annual Kanawha River Cleanup, which spans the banks of the Kanawha River in Fayette, Kanawha, Putnam and Mason counties.
The kick-off event is set for Saturday, September 12 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Bags and gloves will be supplied and the litter and debris that’s collected will be hauled away. Volunteers even get a t-shirt out of the deal.
The annual event helps collect and properly dispose of – literally – tons of litter along the waterway. Spearheaded by the Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan, or REAP, since 2005, the goal is to clean up West Virginia and rid the state of unsightly litter.
Other DEP sponsored cleanups can be scheduled through the month of October.
