In the early morning hours on Thursday, a massive rockslide blocked both lanes of West Virginia 3 (WV 3) near the Raleigh County community of Sundial, but the Division of Highways says one lane is back open.
No injuries have been reported.
In photographs, some of the boulders were significantly taller than a man. According to the state resiliency office, the most likely cause of a rockslide is ground saturation due to heavy rains that passed through Tuesday delivering more than an inch of rain in the county.
Alpha Metallurgical Resources, a coal company with operations in the area, sent heavy equipment to the scene to help break the rocks apart. Highways crews worked through the night hauling away rocks and had one lane of the road open by Friday morning.
A press release from the state Department of Transportation indicated that crews hope to have the road completely reopened by the end of day Friday.
