City Councilman, WVU Professor Relieved of Teaching Duties

The deputy mayor of Morgantown has been relieved of his teaching duties at West Virginia University after police were called to his home for a noncriminal matter.

The Dominion Post reports Mark Brazaitis has been banned from West Virginia University’s campus except for attending prescheduled meetings. A letter from the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Dean R. Gregory Dunaway says Brazaitis must be assessed by the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program to keep his job as an English professor.

Brazaitis represents the sixth ward on the Morgantown City Council. He did not return a message left on his home answering machine.

Brazaitis told WDTV-TV he has struggled with depression. He said he spent time in the hospital after police searched for him on Monday.

West Virginia County Declares State of Emergency Over Roads

A West Virginia county has declared a state of emergency over “deplorable” road conditions.

The Dominion Post cites a release from the Preston County Commission that says Thursday’s proclamation asks the state to address several roads that “pose a danger for motorists, commercial traffic and first responders.”

The release says the problems cannot be addressed by local resources and cannot simply be patched.

Commission President Craig Jennings says they’re not “backing down” until the roads are fixed.

National Weather Service Confirms West Virginia Tornado

Officials have confirmed that a tornado touched down in northern West Virginia as the remnants of Tropical Depression Cindy passed through the state.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh said the tornado in Monongalia County had a rating of EF1 , with maximum winds estimated at 95 mph (153 kph).

It was the eighth tornado to hit Monongalia County since 1950, but the second in as many years.

Heavy rains and high winds were reported around the county and state on Friday.

The Dominion Post reported that boats and a restaurant were battered on Cheat Lake. Bron Kayal, the owner of the Crab Shack Caribba, says the wind lifted a dock five feet in the air before slamming it back down. The wind also did damage to the restaurant.

WVU Hopes to Increase International Student Enrollment

West Virginia University wants to increase its enrollment of international students.

The Dominion Post reports the university recently released a bid request as it seeks companies to help with an overseas marketing effort. Companies have until May 19 to submit bids.

According to the request, WVU’s recruitment campaign would concentrate on China and India, but the university will consider proposals to attract students from any foreign country.

Currently there are about 2,300 international students enrolled at WVU. Overall the Morgantown campus had nearly 28,500 students last fall. WVU says it has students from 107 countries.

WVU is Suing Contractors Over Leaking Roof at Rec Center

West Virginia University is suing over a leaky roof.

The Dominion Post of Morgantown reports that the state’s flagship public university has filed the lawsuit in Monongalia County Circuit Court over problems with the construction of student recreation center.

According to the filing, WVU entered into contracts to build the recreation center in 1998. Those agreements called for a metal roofing system with a 30-year warranty against leaks. But once leaks and other damage were discovered in 2015, the university says the contractors refused to honor the warranty.

The university is asking for unspecified damages and for the roof to be repaired or replaced.

The newspaper was unable to reach the contractors for comment.

WVU's New Engineering Research Building to Open in Fall 2015

West Virginia University’s new Advanced Engineering Research Building is on track to open in the fall of 2015.

Associate director of design and construction John Thompson tells The Dominion Post that construction of the main building is completed. Faculty and staff will begin transitioning to the new building in the spring.

The four-story building will have offices, classrooms, a learning center and graduate student space. It also will have an 8,000-foot clean room for students working on nano-technology.

A clean room is an environment featuring purified air.
