West Virginia GOP Chair, Dem Candidate Spat on Social Media

A Twitter spat has broken out between the West Virginia Republican Party chairwoman and a Democratic candidate for Congress that ended up with her questioning him for collecting a military pension.

The disagreement started Wednesday night when Melody Potter criticized U.S. House 3rd District candidate Richard Ojeda (oh-JED’-ah) for engaging with “liberal buddy” Michael Moore. Potter called the meeting with the filmmaker “a slap in the face to every hardworking West Virginian.”

After Ojeda responded that Potter believes a “weak kneed” Republican is going to defeat him, Potter replied, “at least I do not get money from the government ole’ Richard.”

Ojeda says the attack represents “new lows coming from a scared leadership.”

The West Virginia Democratic Party says the state GOP is “out of touch with our veterans.”

A West Virginia man has been sentenced to up to five years in prison for assaulting a state Senate candidate last year.

Jonathan Porter of Holden was sentenced Wednesday in Logan County Circuit Court in the May 2016 attack on Richard Ojeda.

Ojeda was attacked days before he defeated incumbent senator Art Kirkendoll in the Democratic primary.

Ojeda has said Porter hit him with brass knuckles and then tried to run him over with a pickup. Ojeda suffered broken bones to his face.

Porter apologized in court Wednesday and said he was provoked.

The trial for a man charged with attacking a then-state Senate candidate at a political cookout last year has been moved out of Logan County.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports a judge on Monday granted a request to move 42-year-old Jonathan Porter’s trial to Kanawha County.

Kanawha Circuit Judge Duke Bloom was appointed to preside over Porter’s trial after both Logan County judges recused themselves from the case.

Porter faces malicious assault in the May 2016 beating of Democratic Sen. Richard Ojeda of Logan County. Ojeda was attacked just days before he defeated the incumbent senator, Art Kirkendoll.

Ojeda has said Porter hit him from behind with a pipe and brass knuckles and then tried to run him over with a pickup.

Porter’s trial is slated to begin April 10.

West Virginia State Police say they’ve charged a man with attacking a state Senate candidate at a political cookout.

Senior Trooper J.E. Garren said Jonathan Porter is charged with malicious assault, attempted malicious assault and felony destruction of property in the beating on Sunday of Richard Ojeda, who’s running as a Democrat for a state Senate seat.

Garren said Porter asked Ojeda to put a bumper sticker on his truck, and then attacked him with brass knuckles. Garren said police don’t know what motivated the attack in Logan County.

He said others at the gathering stopped the beating, called police and tried to prevent Porter from leaving, but he rammed their vehicles with his and fled. Garren said Porter turned himself in several hours later.

Online jail records don’t show whether Porter has an attorney. West Virginia’s primary will be held Tuesday.
