Fairmont State Widening President Search after Lawsuit

Following a lawsuit over Fairmont State University’s presidential selection process, officials who had already chosen three finalists for the job are widening their hunt.

  The Times West Virginian reports the Board of Governors voted unanimously Thursday to hire a search firm to broaden the pool of candidates.

Faculty representative Bud Sapp says the faculty senate endorsed Christopher Cirmo. Cirmo is a dean at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and was one of three finalists announced in February. Officials say all three will be considered.

Chairwoman Dixie Yann says she doesn’t know if an interim president will be necessary after FSU President Maria Rose retires in June.

Professors Galen Hansen and Albert Magro filed a lawsuit this month against the board over its selection process. The board has declined to comment.

Group Forms to Promote Candidacy for Next WVSU President

A search committee has been formed to find the next leader at West Virginia State University, and a group of alumni say they have a great prospect.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that the group of current and former students wants a West Virginia University vice president put on the short list for West Virginia State’s next president.

David Fryson is vice president at WVU for diversity, equity and inclusion at WVU.

The founder of the draft Fryson group says he’d be a perfect fit.

A Dunbar native, Fryson said he’s honored by the interest in his presidency at his alma mater, but he declined additional comment.

WVSU’s current president, Brian Hemphill, has announced he’s stepping down to become president of Radford University in Virginia.

West Virginia State University Launches Search for Leader

The search is under way for the 11th president of West Virginia State University.

The Board of Governors launched the hunt on Monday after Brian O. Hemphill was named president of Virginia’s Radford University. His appointment is effective July 2016.

Hemphill had been president of West Virginia State since 2012. His hiring at Radford was announced last week.

West Virginia State’s search aims to have a new leader in place in Institute by the summer.

Hemphill will assist in the search for his successor.
