West Virginia State University Announces 11th President

The West Virginia State University Board of Governors named the university’s 11th president today.

Dr. Anthony Jenkins will serve as the next president of West Virginia State University.  He’ll officially take the post on July 1. Jenkins replaces former president Brian Hemphill who left the university to become the president of Radford University in Virginia.

Jenkins is a native of Washington, D.C., a United States Army veteran and comes to West Virginia State University from the University of Central Florida.

The West Virginia State presidential search advisory committee made the selection of Jenkins along with a two other candidates after a national search.

The candidates were invited to Institute in late April to meet with students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members and business leaders in a series of open forums. The presidential contract requires final approval from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.

West Virginia State University Marks 125 Years of Service

West Virginia State University is celebrating its 125th anniversary.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports university officials, students and alumni honored the historically black college’s founding during a ceremony Thursday.

WVSU President Brian Hemphill said during a speech that the college’s century of serving the Kanawha Valley has changed lives.

Over the years, the university, which was established in 1891, has changed, from a small school for blacks to a full-fledged institution of higher education.

The Founder’s Day ceremony included speeches from local and statewide lawmakers, and featured the release of a short documentary highlighting the university’s history and its impact on West Virginia and the nation.

The university also hosted a concert with the Charleston Chamber Orchestra.

WVSU will continue celebrating its founding throughout the year, until homecoming in October.

Commission Approves WVSU President's Contract

West Virginia State University President Brian Hemphill will get a pay raise under a new five-year contract.

The university announced Thursday that the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission has approved the contract.

Hemphill’s base salary will increase from $235,500 to $287,410. The contract also includes additional compensation paid by the WVSU Foundation that will be based on performance measures.

Board of Governors member Gary Swingle says in a news release that Hemphill’s compensation package aligns more adequately with peer institutions. He also says the president’s duties have increased significantly and the package better compensates them.

The contract is effective July 1.

Hemphill has served as West Virginia State’s president since 2012.

Since then, he has led a $53.98 million infrastructure revitalization effort, launched a strategic plan and increased fundraising.

WVSU President's Expenses Include NFL Tickets, Alcohol

The State Auditor’s Office recently flagged as suspicious charges on a state travel card that included Chicago Bears football tickets, alcohol and other purchases that typically aren’t allowed.

The Charleston Gazette says these purchases were allowed because the travel card belonged to West Virginia State University President Brian Hemphill.

Colleges are among agencies that are exempt from state travel and purchasing policies.

West Virginia State Board of Governors chairman Tom Susman says he doesn’t believe Hemphill did anything wrong. He says the board gave Hemphill the travel card so he could cultivate donors.

To his knowledge, Hemphill says no policy was violated. But he will make any appropriate changes to the system.
