Live Show News: North Miss. Allstars, Robyn Hitchock on Mountain Stage in November.

Mountain Stage with Larry Groce announces two live events for November and tickets are available now to Mountain Stage Members.

Tickets are on sale NOW to Mountain Stage Members for two live events in Charleston this November. Both shows go on sale to the public on Friday, August 25. On Sunday November 5 Larry Groce will welcome a showcase of roots music mainstays featuring The North Mississippi Allstars, Paul Thorn and his Mission Temple Temple Fireworks Revival, Bonnie Bishop and Ireland’s Declan O’Rourke.

Soulful roots vocalist Bonnie Bishop returns to Mountain Stage on November 5. Tickets are available now to Mountain Stage Members.

Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson have long been carrying the torch of Hill-Country Blues as North Mississippi Allstars, which continues with their latest “Prayer for Peace.” PRAYER FOR PEACE affirms North Mississippi Allstars’ own unique place in the American musical tradition, simultaneously master curators, expert revivalists, and forward-thinking pioneers. “This is a new beginning for North Mississippi Allstars,” says Cody Dickinson. “This revitalizing cascade of creativity and explosion of music, it’s just been incredible. And I feel like we’re just getting started. There’s a long beautiful road ahead of us. We’re only just now hitting our stride.”

Audience members will also get a preview of Paul Thorn’s upcoming gospel influenced album, due in 2018, that features the Blind Boys of Alabama, The McCrary Sisters and others. In case you’re wondering where the band name comes from, here’s a reminder.

On Sunday November 19 Mountain Stage returns to the Culture Center theater to welcome back, at long last, singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock. He will make his eighth appearance on the show, the first of which was in 1991, the historic day that R.E.M. came to West Virginia (pictured below). Hitchcock is back now with a new self-titled album.

Also making a long-anticipated return to Mountain Stage, for the first time since October of 1991, will be “Avant Garage” band Pere Ubu. The next Pere Ubu studio album, “20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo”, is scheduled for release September 29 on Cherry Red Records. Following the success of their last album, ‘Carnival Of Souls,’ from which two tracks were used in cult TV show ‘American Horror Story,’ it is the latest in an extensive collection of albums that span the band’s 40+ year history. Joining the lineup on November 19 will be Mountain Stage favorites Joan Shelley, Susan Werner plus “probably the world’s only alternative dixieland / omnipop band,” The Chandler Travis Philharmonic.

LIVE SHOW NEWS: Emily Saliers of Indigo Girls to Appear On Mountain Stage Oct. 22, On Sale Now.

Two Mountain Stage events in Charleston this October are on sale to the public now.

Last week we announced that Mountain Stage will welcome Tony winner and West Virginia native Michael Cerveris as special guest-host on October 22 when the show is part of FestivALL Fall.

We’re excited to announce that Emily Saliers, well known as one-half of the Indigo Girls, will make her first solo appearance on Mountain Stage October 22 in support of “Murmuration Nation,” her first release under her own name, due for release on August 11. Click to pre-order.

“It was so freeing to pursue the kind of music I truly wanted to make without regard to what I’d done before or who I’m expected to be,” says Saliers. “I hope that this record can take people who think they know me already on a journey that’ll really surprise them.”

Australia’s Paul Kelly, whose new album “Life Is Fine” is due Aug. 11, stops by Mountain Stage Oct. 8 as part of his first full-band tour of North America in 13 years.

Tickets have been sold out for more than a month to this Sunday’s live recording of Mountain Stage with Larry Groce featuring St. Paul & the Broken Bones, Mac McAnally, Chastity Brown, Sarah Siskind and The Wild Reeds.

Next we will hear The Wild Reeds, fresh off an appearance at this year’s Newport Folk Festival. Built around the vocals of Kinsey Lee, Sharon Silva and Mackenzie Howe, The Wild Reeds are supporting their latest release for Dualtone records, “The World We Built.” The hour will end with the genre-spanning sounds of Minneapolis-based singer, songwriter and instrumentalist Chastity Brown, who we first met while hanging around at the Gun Flint Tavern in Grand Marais, MN. Her latest, “Silhouettes of Sirens” is out now on Red House Records.

The second hour of the program will begin with a set from Singer-Songwriter Hall of Fame member Mac McAnally, who is taking a break as the guitarist in Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band to appear on Mountain Stage for the third time. Mac’s latest release, “Southbound,” is due August 25 and is the first of his 14 albums to present all-original material in McAnally’s newly arranged orchestral context.

Mac McAnally made his first appearance on Mountain Stage in 1989. His latest, “Southbound,” features his songs performed with an orchestra.

After our pianist Bob Thompson’s featured song, we will welcome back St. Paul and The Broken Bones who have been a tour de force of modern soul influenced rock and R&B. Their latest, “Sea of Noise” was released last September. The band is just back from a European tour.

Mountain Stage Live Show News: Sept. 24 & Oct. 22

Tony Award winning West Virginia Native Michael Cerveris (Fun Home, Assassins) will guest host during FestivALL Fall.

Grammy winning songwriter Dan Wilson added to September 24 line-up.

It may be the dog days of Summer but Mountain Stage is busy planning your live music experiences for the Fall. On Sunday, October 22 Mountain Stage will be a part of FestivALL Fall at the Culture Center Theater. The show’s host and co-founder Larry Groce is excited to welcome special guest-host, Tony Award winning Broadway star, musician and West Virginia native Michael Cerveris.

Cerveris has released several albums and has appeared twice on Mountain Stage with his band Loose Cattle. Widely known for his Broadway roles in Fun Home, The Assassins, The Who’s Tommy, Hedwig and the Angry Itch, and Sweeney Todd, Cerveris also enjoyed a prominent television role in the FOX series “Fringe.” Last year he organized “Take Me Home: a benefit concert for West Virginia” in New York City for victims of the West Virginia floods of 2016. He’ll be appearing in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video live-action comedy series “The Tick.”

Overcoats return to Mountain Stage on October 22 as part of FestivALL Fall. TIckets are on sale now to Mountain Stage Members.

With Cerveris at the host’s microphone on October 22, Mountain Stage is happy to welcome back the electro-pop duo Overcoats. This will mark their second appearance on Mountain Stage and their first since the release of their beloved debut “Young.” You can watch a couple of Overcoats songs over at our VuHaus channel.

Tickets for October 22 are available NOW to Mountain Stage Members for only $15. All other sales begin on Friday, July 28 at 10 a.m. Advance tickets are only $20 through August 31, $30 after August 31, and $35 on the day of show. Mountain Stage Members make a sustaining contribution at the level of their chosing, and are eligible for special thank-you gifts, discounts and early access to our live shows at the Culture Center.

In other news: We’ve added Grammy-award winning songwriter and producer Dan Wilson to the lineup on Sunday September 24. Wilson’s new record “Re-Covered” features re-imagined versions of songs he has written for, and with, other artists, including “Not Ready To Make Nice,” by The Dixie Chicks, “When The Stars Come Out” by Chris Stapleton, and “Someone Like You,” the monster hit by Adele. We last saw Wilson in 2014 in his native state of Minnesota for one of our Grand Marais shows. He performed some songs from his last solo album, “Love Without Fear,” and the Semisonic hit “Closing Time.” Mountain Stage Fun Fact: Wilson’s first appearance on Mountain Stage was in March, 1992 with his pre-Semisonic group Trip Shakespeare.

Grammy award winning songwriter and former Semisonic front man Dan Wilson returns to Mountain Stage September 24. Tickets are on sale now.

Also added to the bill on September 24 is Phoebe Hunt & the Gatherers. Hunt joined us once before as a member of the Belleville Outfit in 2010 and her new record is called “Shanti’s Shadow”. Also scheduled to appear is the Martin Sexton Trio and Son Little. Tickets are available now.

WATCH: Mountain Stage Episode #900 Sunday at 7p.m.

Mountain Stage is excited to record the program’s historic 900th episode this Sunday at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston. The show will open with a set by the Sherman Holmes Project, whose new album “The Richmond Sessions,” is available Friday, July 21. Sherman and his brother Wendell, along with long-time musical partner Popsy Dixon, made more than a dozen appearances on Mountain Stage as The Holmes Brothers starting in 1990. Though we’ve lost Wendell and Popsy, Sherman is back with a brand new new album and we can’t wait to hear him with his new band.

After Sherman will be our own Julie Adams and the Mountain Stage Band, followed by a set from Nashville-based instrumental rockers Steelism. This will be their second appearance on Mountain Stage and their first since the release of their latest – “ISM.”

West Virginia’s best known storyteller Bil Lepp will join us as part of episode #900 this Sunday. You can watch live at mountainstage.org

We follow an instrumental performance with instrument-less performance! Storyteller Bil Lepp is a true West Virginia treasure, and we’re excited to have him spin a few yarns for us as part of our 900^th episode.

Just after 8p.m. The Mastersons will be taking over for their second appearance on Mountain Stage. While they are also members of Steve Earle’s Dukes, Chris and Eleanor are also great songwriters and have unmatched vocal harmony. Their latest, “Transient Lullaby” is out now on Red House Records.

As always, our house-pianist Bob Thompson will be featured in the middle of the program’s second hour, followed by a set from Steve Earle & the Dukes. Earle has been all over promoting his latest, critically acclaimed release “So You Wanna Be An Outlaw.” Join us at MountainStage.org to peek in at Earle’s sixth appearance on Mountain Stage since 1996.

Drive-By Truckers, Paul Kelly Headed to Mountain Stage Oct. 8

Fresh off the release of their critically acclaimed and politically charged latest release, “American Band,” modern-day rockers Drive-By Truckers will appear on a special Mountain Stage w/ Larry Groce Sunday, October 8 at The Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences in Charleston, WV.

The Drive-By Truckers have made two appearances on Mountain Stage since 2009. The band’s primary songwriters Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley have both made solo appearances.

Australian songwriting standard-bearer Paul Kelly, who has appeared on Mountain Stage five times since 1992, will also be on the bill. Kelly has recorded over 21 studio albums as well as several film soundtracks (Lantana and the Cannes 2006 highlight, Jindabyne) and two live albums, in an influential career spanning more than thirty years. He was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1997. Listen to his 2012 appearance at NPR Music. More artists will be added in the coming weeks.

Australian songwriting royalty Paul Kelly returns to Mountain Stage on October 8 at the Clay Center.

Emerging songwriter Daniel Norgren, who has been building an impassioned audience in his home country of Sweden and throughout Europe, is making Mountain Stage a part of his first North American tour. Read more in a Vinyl Me, Please feature.

Tickets will be $25 and $35 in advance, reserved seating, available to Clay Center Subscribers and Mountain Stage Members starting Tuesday, June 27 at 10 a.m. Individual sales will begin online Friday, July 28 and at all other outlets starting Monday, July 31.
