Suzette Cook has been named interim superintendent of Logan County schools amid a state investigation.

WSAZ-TV reports the county Board of Education named Cook during a meeting Monday. She replaces Phyllis Doty, who announced her retirement last week.

Cook has held various roles over the past decade, including as superintendent of McDowell County schools.

County Board President Paul Hardesty announced last week that the school system is under investigation by the state Legislature’s Commission on Special Investigations. Media outlets have reported the investigation focuses on purchases, including wedding decorations bought last year.

A federal judge has tossed a lawsuit filed against the Logan County Board of Education by the mother of a teenager who was told to turn his NRA T-shirt inside out when he came to school.

The lawsuit claimed the woman’s son’s constitutional rights had been violated.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that a federal judge dismissed the case because of the inaction of plaintiff’s attorney, Benjamin White. The attorney said he plans to refile the lawsuit this week.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Tanya Lardieri and her son, Jared Marcum. Marcum was charged in 2013 by police with disrupting an educational process and obstructing an officer when he arrived at school with the T-shirt.

The charges against him were eventually dismissed.
