All Star Line-up of Roots Music on Sunday's Mountain Stage in Charleston

Mountain Stage continues its production schedule this Sunday with episode #955 at the Culture Center Theater on the state capitol grounds in Charleston, W.Va. Tickets are still available online and at Taylor Books at 226 Capitol St. in downtown, Charleston.

Update: Friday 9/27, 2:00p.m. Amy Speace has asked to postpone her appearance on Mountain Stage, originally scheduled for Sunday, September 29, because of a family emergency. We will work with her to reschedule as soon as possible. Our entire team sends Amy our best.

Returning to Mountain Stage for the fourth time since 2011 is Virginia based, modern roots group The Steel Wheels. The band followed up two recent live EPs, Volume 1: Live at the Station Inn and Volume 2: Live at The Jefferson Theatre, with their latest studio record Over the Trees.

The album was recorded with producer Sam Kassirer, who worked with The Steel Wheels on 2017s’ Wild As We Came Here. The band has also expanded their core group to become a quintet, with the permanent addition of percussionist Kevin Garcia to the longtime lineup of Brian Dickel, Trent Wagler, Jay Lapp, and Eric Brubaker.

With Me And The Ghost Of Charlemagne, songwriter and vocalist Amy Speace returns with for her fifth appearance on the show since 2009.  Me And The Ghost Of Charlemagne finds Speace focusing on the real side of pursuing a musical dream, filled with an ever-shifting balance of struggle and joy. Produced by longtime collaborator Neilson Hubbard and recorded during the final weeks of Speace’s pregnancy with her first son, Me And The Ghost Of Charlemagne captures Amy Speace at her most nakedly honest, with sparsely-decorated songs with her larger-than-life voice and detail-rich songwriting.

Award winning songwriter Radney Foster, whose hits include “Nobody Wins” for himself and “Crazy Over You” with his duo Foster & Lloyd, has just released his first work of fiction and a companion album. “For You To See The Stars” is a project comprised of two parts – a book and a CD. The book is a collection of short stories published by Working Title Farm. Though the stories are fiction, they are informed by Foster’s upbringing on the Mexican border in Del Rio, TX. The beauty of this CD/book combo lives within Foster’s extensive imagery, which not only further expands the meaning behind his songs, but gives the reader a look at the thought process behind his songwriting.

Nashville’s Kieran Kane joined us on Mountain Stage for the first time in 1994 on a show that also featured The Band and Cowboy Junkies. He is known as a “godfather of Americana” thanks to his solo work, his tenure as a member of The O’Kanes, and the trio Kane Welch Kaplan, who appeared on Mountain Stage in 2008.

His musical partner Rayna Gellert has joined us as a member of the all-star string band Uncle Earl and alongside Virginia’s Scott Miller. Now, she and Kane will debut on the show together, with songs from When the Sun Goes Down, their follow-up to their debut, The Ledges. Recorded live at home, When the Sun Goes Down captures the duo’s grounded, restrained playing and singing with a shimmering intimacy.

Rounding out the line-up will be Boise-based blues/roots/soul/country purveyor Eilen Jewell and her band. Jewell’s new album Gypsy finds her picking up the electric guitar while putting a personal and politically spin into the lyrics. She first joined us in 2007 and will make her third appearance on Mountain Stage this Sunday. We’re loving the swampy feel to “Crawl.”

Erin Rae has made it her musical mission to redefine what a southern singer can be. In doing so she’s earned the respect of many peers and musical influencers, including Kathy Mattea and Grammy Award winner John Paul White, who signed her to his Florence, Alabama-based label, Single Lock Records. Her album Putting On Airs was released in June, which lead to an Emerging Act Of The Year nomination at the 2019 Americana Music Awards, and she just blew some minds with her Tiny Desk Concert.

Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and singer Lisa Mednick Powell released her latest album Blue Book in 2018 after a long hiatus spent teaching English. She called on some friends from her musical history, Victoria Williams, Tommy Malone, Alison Young, and Greg Leisz among them, and to fill out the sounds on Blue Book.

Prior to the sabbatical, Powell released two critically acclaimed albums, Artifacts of Love and Semaphore, and made two appearances on Mountain Stage in 1994 and 1995. She learned to play the accordion in New Orleans, where she also took saxophone lessons from the late, great Charles Neville, and was a member of the rock n roll group The SongDogs.

Big Possum Stringband will join us in Elkins, WV Saturday July 27 as we close out the Augusta Heritage Festival.

The Big Possum Stringband are also set to release their debut album soon. They carry on the tradition of the original Big Possum string band,  who were on Mountain Stage back in 1988, believe it or not, with fiddler Harvey Sampson. Comprised of contest winners Tessa Dillon (fiddle) and Seth Swingle (banjo) and multi-instrumentalist Evan Collins, this group is keeping Applachian Stringband music alive and well. They’ve been winning awards left and right, including 1st place in the 2018 old-time stringband contest at the Appalachian Stringband Festival, a.ka. “Clifftop.” The band join us before heading to the 2019 activities at Clifftop, then they’re headed off to Australia.

Another group expanding on the traditions of old-time music is the T-Mart Rounders. Featuring Jesse Milnes on guitar, fiddle and vocals, Kevin Chesser on banjo, and the percussive dance of Becky Hill, T-Mart Rounders are re-envisioning Appalachian clogging and flatfooting as its own instrument within the band. They were founded in 2012 in Elkins, and in 2017 released their debut recording.

Two-time Grammy winning duo Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer have been making traditional and contemporary music together for several decades now, and they’ve recently brought in young banjo player Sam Gleaves for an album called “Shout and Shine”. Sam was on Mountain Stage in Elkins back in 2015, and Fink & Marxer joined us most recently in 2017.

We’ll also hear from Portland, Oregon based acoustic roots luminary Jody Carroll, whose blend of progressive and traditional acoustic blues is beloved in folk and blues music circles alike. He wowed at MerleFest in 2018 and has shared the stage with many blues greats. His latest labum is called Back to the Country.

On Sunday September 29 Larry Groce will be back with us as The Steel Wheels return for their fourth appearance on the show. Last week we told you that songwriter Amy Speace had been added, as well as the duo of Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert. This week we’re happy to announce the return of revered songwriter, and recent author, Radney Foster to the bill on September 29. Tickets are available online and at Taylor Books.

Foster has released For You To See The Stars, his first book of fiction, as a companion piece to his 11th album of the same name. Journalist Peter Cooper puts it best, “Radney Foster writes with uncommon depth of emotion, humor, empathy, and clarity. I’m going to ask him how he does it, and if he tells me I’ll let you in on his secret. Until then, it’s best that we read, wonder, and revel.”

Foster has written eight number one hit singles, including his own “Nobody Wins,” and “Crazy Over You” with duo Foster & Lloyd. His discography contains countless cuts by artists ranging anywhere from country (Keith Urban, The Dixie Chicks, Luke Bryan, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) to contemporary (Marc Broussard, https://youtu.be/vjOgyVETIVk”>Hootie & The Blowfish, Kenny Loggins, Los Lonely Boys).

Beloved singer and songwriter Shawn Colvin will be celebrating the 30th Anniversary of her 1989 debut album “Steady On” as she returns for an intimate solo performance on Mountain Stage Sunday, September 15. That classic album featured vocals by long-time Mountain Stage favorite Lucy Kaplansky, who recently released her first new album in six years, Everyday Street That release features a guest-spot from, you guessed it, Shawn Colvin, so we couldn’t be happier to welcome these “https://youtu.be/xWUheGc2x-g”>Old Friends” back to West Virginia on the same show.

Adding to the excitement on September 15 is the first appearance by genre-bending songwriter Rebecca Loebe, whose latest release Give Up Your Ghosts features the single “Popular,” which you hear in the new video below.
