Listen: Beth Nielsen Chapman With The Mountain Stage Song Of The Week

Songwriter’s Hall of Fame member and twice-grammy nominated artist Beth Nielsen Chapman performs on this week’s encore episode of Mountain Stage with guest host Kathy Mattea.

We’ll hear Chapman perform songs from her latest album, “Hearts of Glass,” and others from her prolific career.

Our Song of the Week, “How We Love,” appears on her 2010 release “Back to Love.” While she performs with the Mountain Stage Band for most of her set, “How We Love” features just Chapman at the piano with her powerfully expressive voice and heartfelt lyrics in the spotlight.

Artists join guest host Kathy Mattea for the finale song including Lisa Mednick Powell, Lillie Mae, Erin Rae, Carrie Newcomer and Beth Nielsen Chapman.

You’ll hear Chapman’s entire set, as well as performances by Carrie Newcomer, Lillie Mae, Lisa Mednick Powell and Erin Rae, on this week’s encore episode of Mountain Stage.

Listen: Steve Earle & the Dukes on Mountain Stage

Our Song of the Week comes from the Hardcore Troubadour himself, Steve Earle.

Steve Earle is widely considered to be one of the greatest living songwriters, so it’s a testament to the prowess of the late Guy Clark that Earle pays tribute to the Texas songwriting legend on his latest collection of Clark-penned songs, “Guy.”

In his seventh appearance on Mountain Stage since 1996, Steve Earle & the Dukes perform a set of songs from “Guy,” including our Song of the Week, “Dublin Blues.”

If you watched “There’s A Stream” recently, you heard some new songs from Earle from his album The Ghosts of West Virginia. We had hoped to record a new session with him earlier this year, but we look forward to welcoming him back to Almost Heaven with those songs next Summer.

Original Post: Since we’ve been unable to record fresh episodes recently, we reached out to the guests we’ve had to postpone appearances by and asked for performance video submissions. The results will premiere this Sunday June 28 at 7p.m. EST as we present “There’s a Stream,” a collection of virtual performances curated by Mountain Stage. Join host Larry Groce at MountainStage.org or LiveSessions.NPR.org to watch along as we enjoy remote performances from Steve Earle, Darrell Scott, Amy Speace, Karan Casey, Lilly Hiatt, Nobody’s Girl, Malcolm Holcombe, The Haden Triplets and Frances Luke Accord.

We’ll have a featured set from Earle, whose latest album, released on New West Records, is called The Ghosts of West Virginia. It features songs he wrote for the play “Coal Country,” which premiered in New York City in February but was shuddered shortly after due to the pandemic. The songs are built around the tragic explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine that killed twenty-nine coal miners in 2010.

This and many more intimate performances await you this Sunday.

Listen: The Devil Makes Three on Mountain Stage

Our Song of the Week is a fan-favorite from Colorado’s The Devil Makes Three. The Devil Makes Three have built a fervent fan base with their no-holds-barred live shows and “Graveyard,” included here from their Mountain Stage set, is a fan favorite from the band’s 2002 self-titled debut album.

Last year they headlined at Red Rocks Amphitheatre- the legendary Colorado music venue where their latest release, “Live at Red Rocks” was recorded.

This week’s broadcast of “Mountain Stage” revisits a show from last April with special guest host Kathy Mattea that includes an awe-inspiring set from New England quartet Darlingside. Our Song of the Week is the band’s harmony-rich performance of “Hold Your Head Up High,” recorded in Morgantown, West Virginia in partnership with WVU Arts & Entertainment.

Morgantown, West Virginia native Charles Wesley Godwin’s song “Coal Country” reminds us that the commodity’s impact reaches far beyond Appalachia, broadening the definition of what many think of as “Coal Country.”

"Put a roof over my head and the armor on the tanks of Normandy"

Guest-host Kathy Mattea said “He sings about the hard working, close knit communities, and a deep sense of place, and of belonging somewhere.”

“Coal Country” appears on Godwin’s new album, “Seneca.” Earlier this year we premiered the Robert Tinnell directed video for “Coal Country,” which you can watch here.
