Hiss Golden Messenger appears on this week’s encore episode of Mountain Stage, with songs from their album “Hallelujah Anyhow,” as well as this tune from their 2013 release “Haw.”
M.C. Taylor is the front man and songwriter for North Carolina-based roots rock band Hiss Golden Messenger, whose electrified sound blurs the lines between country, blues and folk music. The band makes their second appearance on this week’s episode of Mountain Stage with Larry Groce.
Hear the entire set from Hiss Golden Messenger, plus performances by Kris Delmhorst, Teddy Thompson, Nicki Bluhm and West Virginia’s own The Parachute Brigade, on this week’s encore episode. Find a station in your area and stay tuned to our NPR Music page to hear the entire show again.
This Sunday, July 15th, Mountain Stage welcomes Hiss Golden Messenger, Kris Delmhorst, Nicki Bluhm, Teddy Thompson, and The Parachute Brigade to the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, WV. Tickets are still available online, by phone at 877.987.6487 or locally at Taylor Books.
Lead by songwriter M.C. Taylor, Hiss Golden Messenger has created a name for themselves primarily in the Americana folk genre but offer sounds pulled from a multitude of influences. The band’s first appearance on the show was back in 2014, which you can hear a bit of bellow.
Kris Delmhorst‘s most recent release, The Wild, allows us to dive into the artists’ eclectic taste and poetic songwriting. Watch her video for “All The Way Around” now.
Throughout her rising career, Nicki Bluhm has delved into an impressive lineup of collaborations which include Phil Lesh, Ryan Adams, and The Infamous Stringdusters. Her new album “To Rise You Gotta Fall” was done in Memphis, and it sounds like Memphis!
This will be Teddy Thompson’s third visit to Mountain Stage. Since his last in 2006, he has released five albums, including Family, a collaborative of songs put together by each member of his family, including his parents Linda and Richard Thompson.
Based out of Beckley, WV, The Parachute Brigade have recently released The Gold EP, a collection of songs showcasing their expansive sound, their thoughtful songwriting and tight harmony.
Now we’re rolling out two July shows and both on sale now!
Our Mountain Stage Members have had access to these tickets for a week already. If you’d like to be first in line for tickets, consider making a sustaining gift directly to the program and receive seven days of exclusive, online pre-sale to all our Culture Center shows. You’ll also get periodic playlists, discounts and dispatches from the Mountain Stage office.
On Sunday, July 29 we welcome back singer, songwriter, guitarist- oh yeah and Emmy award winning actor- Jeff Daniels, along with the Ben Daniels Band. The BDB is led by Jeff’s son, and the group is embarking on their “Acoustic Sittin’ Tour,” which is also a newly released album.
We’ve also confirmed Dawn Landes for July 29. She recently did her first record in Nashville, called “Meet Me At The River,” and has moved from New York to Music City. The album, due later this year, features our friend and West Virginia Music Hall of Fame member Charlie McCoy on harmonica!
Landes is beloved collaborator, having done work in recent years with Sufjan Stevens, Justin Townes Earle, Jim James and Piers Faccini, and she has a sweet, heartfelt cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” which we shared below.
We’re pleased to announce that The Handsome Family has been added to the July 29 show. During their 25-year career Brett and Rennie Sparks have created songs that transform the mundane landscape of modern life. Their work has been covered by the likes of Jeff Tweedy, Jason Lytle and Andrew Bird, who released an entire record of songs by the Handsome Family.
Both July shows are at the Culture Center Theater on the State Capitol Grounds. All tickets are general admission, $20 in advance, $35 on Day of Show, when available. Tickets are available online, by phone at 877.987.6487 and at Taylor Books.
