The Trump administration is moving to cancel a program that was intended to help lower electricity bills for low-income residents.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is planning to cancel $7 billion in grants under the Solar for All program, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
That includes $106 million for West Virginia, according to the program’s website.
The funds were supposed to pay for the installation of solar panels on residential rooftops and improve home energy efficiency.
The program was intended to help low-income and disadvantaged residents, who bear the biggest burden from rising electricity costs.
The West Virginia Public Service Commission is considering two cases that could increase the average Appalachian Power customer’s bill by about $29 a month.
The Trump administration has been rolling back policies from the Biden administration that promote clean energy and enacting policies that support fossil fuels.
Groups that support the Solar for All program said they’d take the Trump administration to court over it.
“If leaders in the Trump administration move forward with this unlawful attempt to strip critical funding from communities across the United States, we will see them in court,” said Kym Meyer, litigation director for the Southern Environmental Law Center.
