West Virginia kids can help themselves save for college by writing a short essay.
Now in its 19th year, the “When I Grow Up” essay contest allows students to submit a short essay of 200 words or less that explains what they want to be when they grow up.
Winners from 15 regions will receive $500 for their SMART529 savings account, and another $500 for their school.
SMART529 is a college savings plan offered by the Board of Trustees of the West Virginia College and Jumpstart Savings Programs.
One regional winner will be randomly selected to receive the $4,500 grand prize for a total of $5,000.
The “When I Grow Up” essay contest is open to West Virginia students in grades K-5. The deadline to enter is Dec. 12, 2025.
Teachers who use the “When I Grow Up” essay contest in their classroom can also submit an essay about their efforts for a chance to win a $2,500 prize.
