WVDOH and Power Utility Brace for Winter Storms

The West Virginia Department of Highways Power company and FirstEnergy Corp. are preparing for the winter storm expected to hit West Virginia and the Northeast tonight and tomorrow.

The National Weather Service is expecting up to 20 inches of snowfall in the mountainous regions of the eastern part of the state.  Up to a foot of snow is possible in parts of northern West Virginia starting Monday night.

In a press release, the West Virginia Department of Highways encouraged travelers to pay attention to West Virginia 5-11 Traveler Information System for updates on road conditions and weather alerts. The service is available online, through a mobile app or by dialing 5-1-1. 
 
Department of Highways crews have pre-treated some roads, focusing on the Eastern Panhandle and the north-central and southern parts of the state where the storm is expected to hit the hardest. 

FirstEnergy Corp. said in a press release it has been in touch with contractors about the possibility of assisting with power restoration efforts.

The National Weather Service says the weight of the snow on tree limbs and power lines could lead to widespread power outages.
