Three West Virginia schools have received national recognition.

Pleasant Valley Elementary School in Marion County, Kellogg Elementary School in Wayne County and Gilmore Elementary School in Jackson County have been named Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes schools that demonstrate innovative school practice, teaching and learning, while also meeting the needs of students at various levels.

“The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation’s students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities. As we celebrate their achievements, let us look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child.”

All three schools were recognized as exemplary high-performing schools, meaning they are among the highest-performing schools in the state, measured by state assessments or national tests.

These schools are part of more than 350 schools recognized across the country in the 2024 Blue Ribbon cohort.

Three West Virginia schools receive Blue Ribbon status most years. The 2023 recipients were Sherman Elementary in Boone County, Jayenne Elementary in Marion County and Ritchie Elementary in Ohio County.
