On this week’s premiere broadcast of Mountain Stage, guest host David Mayfield welcomes Rhonda Vincent, Neal Francis, Otis Gibbs, Cathy Fink, Marcy Marxer & Chao Tian: From China to Appalachia, and Dawn Landes.
Our Song of the Week is “9 to 5,” performed live on Mountain Stage by the queen of bluegrass, Rhonda Vincent. This 1980 classic was made popular by Grammy-winning music icon Dolly Parton.
On this episode, you’ll also hear live performances from Chicago piano rocker Neal Francis, alt-country singer-songwriter Otis Gibbs, the incredible combination of American and Chinese folk music by award-winning folk artists Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, and Chinese musician Chao Tian (From China to Appalachia), and singer-songwriter Dawn Landes.

Our Song of the Week comes from the legendary jazz fusion band, best known for their 70s era records with the great pianist Herbie Hancock, The Headhunters. “Watermelon Man” was written by Hancock and was first released in 1962. On this live recording, you’ll hear Michael Clark on drums, William Summer on Vocals and Percussion, Donald Harrison on Saxophone, Shea Pierre on Piano, and Chris Severin on bass.
