This week, we’re revisiting our episode “What Is Appalachia?” from December 2021. Appalachia connects mountainous parts of the South, the Midwest, the Rust Belt and even the Northeast. That leaves so much room for geographic and cultural variation, as well as many different views on what Appalachia really is.

Our Fall season of brand new episodes begins with this week’s premiere broadcast of Mountain Stage as host Kathy Mattea welcomes Shemekia Copeland, Tab Benoit, Charlie Musselwhite, Harlem Gospel Travelers, and Abby Posner to a show recorded at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, WV.
Harlem Gospel Travelers, a dynamic gospel-soul group known for their vibrant performances, shared their vocal harmonies and upbeat blend of gospel, funk, and soul music with us during their debut appearance on Mountain Stage. Our song of the week is their performance of “Jesus Rhapsody,” which appears on the band’s latest release, Rhapsody.
On this episode, you’ll also hear live performances from Grammy-nominated electric soul and blues vocalist Shemekia Copeland, swamp blues guitarist and singer Tab Benoit, living legend of blues harmonica Charlie Musselwhite, and California-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Abby Posner.
