This week, we’re revisiting our episode “What Is Appalachia?” from December 2021. Appalachia connects mountainous parts of the South, the Midwest, the Rust Belt and even the Northeast. That leaves so much room for geographic and cultural variation, as well as many different views on what Appalachia really is.

This week’s encore broadcast of Mountain Stage features Portland, OR indie folk rockers Blitzen Trapper, Philadelphia’s piano-driven rock band Low Cut Connie, North Carolina bluegrass group Town Mountain, and amplified, Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter Humbird.
Our Song of the Week is “Planetarium” by Blitzen Trapper. The band stopped by Mountain Stage in November of 2024 for their third appearance, promoting their album 100’s of 1000’s, Millions of Billion.
The album was produced by the band’s lead singer and songwriter, Eric Earley and features a collection of songs that reflect on his musical beginnings, infused with new perspectives he gained through the exploration of Buddhism and meditation.
