Amidst a blizzard blanketing up to 10 inches of snow, Snowshoe Mountain Resort started spinning its lifts for this winter’s ski season. The resort opened Thursday for its 50th winter season.

Snowshoe’s Shawn Cassell said this year they are starting off with more snow than they typically have, after weeks of cold temps.

I’m going into my 10th winter season at Snowshoe, and this is by far the most snow I’ve seen on an opening day in all those years,” Cassel said. “So really, really great start for us this winter.”

He said all that snow means the resort will have more trails open earlier.

“We’re off to a good start, and adding even more trails by this weekend,” Cassel said. “It just kind of instills a lot of confidence in folks for the season ahead.”

Saturday, Dec. 7 marks the beginning of kid’s free ski week, and Sunday Dec. 8 is West Virginia’s ski free day with proof of residency
