Residents across West Virginia and visitors to the state will soon have an opportunity to fish in public lakes, streams and rivers without paying for a fishing license.
From Saturday, June 7 to Sunday, June 8, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) will host its annual Free Fishing Days event, the organization announced last week.
In order to fish in public bodies of water, the WVDNR requires residents ages 15 and older to obtain a fishing license each year, which can be purchased online. But on Free Fishing Days the division temporarily suspends this requirement.
In a May 22 press release, WVDNR Director Brett McMillion described the event as a way to bring people together and help more people experience fishing.
“Whether you’re introducing your kids to fishing for the first time or getting back out on the water with friends, this weekend is all about making memories in West Virginia’s great outdoors,” McMillion said.
Additionally, the WVDNR will host fishing derbies for youth ages 3 to 14 on June 7 at the Bowden Fish Hatchery in Randolph County and Little Beaver State Park in Raleigh County. This year marks the 30th year of the annual fishing derby event, according to Jim Hedrick, WVDNR hatchery program manager.
“The Bowden Fishing Derby has become a cherished tradition for many families — and parents who participated when they were young anglers are bringing their kids back to carry on the tradition,” Hedrick said in the press release. “As we celebrate the derby’s 30th anniversary, we hope to continue this legacy for years to come and inspire the next generation of anglers.”
