This week marks the 25 year anniversary of the world renowned alt-rock band R.E.M.’s appearance on Mountain Stage. The 1991 performance was one of only a handful of live performances the band gave that year.

Despite a nationwide increase in home births over the last few years, the percentage of women choosing to give birth in their homes remains less than 1 percent throughout most of Appalachia.
Kara Lofton reports many of the women in the region choosing a home birth with a midwife do it because they want to control their birthing experience and eliminate what they perceive as unnecessary medical interventions.
