West Virginia Public Broadcasting (WVPB) recently hosted a pair of musicians from West Virginia University (WVU) to come perform live in-studio during Classical Music with Matt Jackfert. Albert Houde, associate horn professor at WVU and principal horn with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra (WVSO), and Sun Jung Lee, collaborative pianist at WVU, serenaded our Wednesday afternoon with a live performance of Reimaginings by Frank Gulino.

This piece was written specifically for Houde during the COVID-19 pandemic and was finished in 2021. This piece is in three movements –– “Dark,” “Reflective,” and “Triumphant” — and describes society’s reemergence from the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine.

Composer Frank Gulino utilizes lush harmonies and soaring melodies in his writing to describe this comeback from the pandemic.

Check out this French Horn and Piano duet as they performed live in our WVPB studios and discussed the intricacies of the piece and more!
