Delegate Highlights Domestic Violence Legislation, But Argues More Needs Done To Help Survivors

Ahead of Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Day at the Capitol this week, we bring you a special report and update on several bills aimed at helping survivors.

Host Suzanne Higgins is joined by senior reporter Dave Mistich for an update on the latest legislative action from both the House and Senate.

Higgins also speaks with Del. Sammi Brown, D-Jefferson, who is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and is known for her efforts in combatting domestic violence issues. Brown discusses successful domestic violence legislation this session but addresses some bills that may not make it to the governor’s desk.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 33 percent of West Virginia women and 41 percent of West Virginia men experience intimate partner physical or sexual violence, and/or stalking in their lifetime, and an estimated 1/3 of all homicides in West Virginia are related to domestic violence. Recently, reporter Liz McCormick visited with survivors and advocates.
