Program Editor – Inside Appalachia (Contract)

West Virginia Public Broadcasting is seeking an experienced editor for its radio program Inside Appalachia.

Inside Appalachia is a culture and public affairs program broadcast throughout West Virginia and much of Central Appalachia. The program explores the people, traditions, and issues shaping the region and is distributed both on public radio stations and as a podcast.

The Program Editor will play an important role in maintaining the editorial and production quality of the show by reviewing scripts and audio, guiding edits, and collaborating with the production team.

This is a remote, contract position.

Responsibilities

The Program Editor’s duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Review all audio and scripts for the show, making edits or suggestions to improve clarity, accuracy, and storytelling.
  • Participate in the weekly Inside Appalachia editorial meeting with show staff.
  • Join script and voice meetings to discuss edits and revisions to the program script with the host and producers.
  • Oversee recording sessions, ensuring clarity of delivery and appropriate pacing during script reads.
  • Listen to the completed program mix and check for errors or issues that may have been missed during earlier edits.
  • Act as an editorial sounding board and contribute ideas for story development and program content.
  • Provide editing support for staff stories produced for Inside Appalachia.
  • Offer backup or specialty editing assistance for other newsroom projects when needed.

Qualifications

  • Experience editing radio, podcast, or audio storytelling content
  • Proficiency with digital audio editing tools
  • Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail
  • Ability to collaborate with producers, hosts, and reporters in a remote environment
  • Availability to attend weekly virtual meetings
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Broad knowledge of journalism, storytelling, and current events
  • Interest in Appalachian culture and regional issues is strongly preferred
