With National Voter Registration Month in September coming just ahead of a statewide special election, the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office is encouraging voters to make sure their registration makes them eligible to head to the polls in early October.

The West Virginia secretary of state is asking more than 130,000 voters to update their address.

Media outlets report that the request from Secretary of State Mac Warner's office will come in the form of postcards in the next few days.

The West Virginia secretary of state's office says more than 47,000 outdated or ineligible voter files have been removed from the state's voter registration system.

Secretary of State Mac Warner said in a news release his office worked with county clerks in every county to remove the files, and he says there's still more work to do.

Time is running out for West Virginians to register to vote in the Nov. 8 general election.

Tuesday is the deadline to register. Residents can apply to register to vote online, at a county clerk's office or by mail.

The Secretary of State’s Office is encouraging West Virginians of all ages to register to vote or update their current voter registration during National Voter Registration Month.

Eleven West Virginia high schools have been recognized for student voter registration.

Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant's office announced the Jennings Randolph Award to the schools for the 2015-2016 academic year. The award recognizes 100 percent registration of voting-eligible students.

More than 33,000 West Virginia voters have used the state’s online voter registration system. The numbers come from the Secretary of State’s Office as the deadline to register to vote in West Virginia’s primary election is quickly approaching.

Time is running out for West Virginians to register to vote in the May 10 primary election.

The deadline to register is April 19.

Early voting begins April 27 and runs through May 7. Early voting is open during regular business hours at each county courthouse or annex. Early voting also is available each Saturday.

West Virginia's new online voter registration system has clicked with voters.

Secretary of State Natalie Tennant says her office received 1,082 submissions through the system in its first month. The submissions included 439 new voter registration applications, 349 address changes, 267 party changes and 27 name changes.

Data gathered by The Pew Charitable Trusts’ Election Initiative is making waves Tuesday as the organization released four years of collected elections information, ranking all 50 states and the District of Columbia on their performances in the 2008, 2010 and 2012 elections.

According to their indicators, West Virginia is improving, but not as quickly as state elections leaders might hope.
