A Tennessee company has completed its purchase of a West Virginia psychiatric hospital and two affiliates. 

Brentwood, Tennessee-based Meridian Behavioral Health Systems announces Wednesday the conclusion of the purchase of Charleston's Highland Hospital, which has 80 acute-care beds along with a 24-bed residential treatment facility for children.

A former West Virginia Republican Party chairman has been selected to become the top federal prosecutor in the southern half of the state.

President Donald Trump nominated Mike Stuart to be U.S. attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia.

State and Federal officials were in Huntington Thursday afternoon to announce a series of grants aimed at helping create employment in the southern part of the state.

Three grants in excess of $6 million will target manufacturing, agriculture and healthcare in the southern part of the state. The grants were awarded at the Robert C. Byrd Institute in Huntington. The Appalachian Hatchery project will boost workforce training opportunities through RCBI. The Sprouting Farms program will help facilitate an agricultural industry in nine counties in southern West Virginia.

Mohawk Industries Inc. says it is closing a wood flooring manufacturing plant in southern West Virginia, idling 111 workers.

The plant at the Buck Harless Wood Products Industrial Park in Holden will close by May 7 and its operations will be moved to a recently upgraded facility in Melbourne, Arkansas.

On November 23, 1869, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company transferred ownership of its struggling rail line to Collis Huntington and others. It was a major turning point in a venture that would transform southern West Virginia into a coal-producing giant.

ArcelorMittal has laid off more than 50 workers at three coal mines in Southern West Virginia.

ArcelorMittal spokesman Bill Steers tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that the layoffs are necessary because of decreased demand for coal.

The layoffs affect 58 workers at the company's XMV, Concept and Extra Energy mines in McDowell County.

ArcelorMittal/Princeton general manager Greg Jessee tells the newspaper that coal mining in the U.S. has sharply declined in recent years.

The owner of a hardwood flooring plant in southern West Virginia says it's laying off 47 workers.

Unilin notified workers at its Mingo County facility that the layoffs are effective Jan. 1. The facility at the Buck Harless Wood Products Industrial Park employs 182 workers.

  Senate President Jeff Kessler is setting up a task force as part of a push to help West Virginia's struggling southern coalfields.

On Thursday, the Marshall County Democrat announced the Southern Coalfields Organizing and Revitalizing the Economy initiative, or SCORE.

The program is based off the Shaping our Appalachian Region program, which has similar goals for eastern Kentucky's hurting coalfields.

Kessler's 13-member Senate task force will look at a variety of ways to revitalize the coalfields.

CU Student Photos 'Urban' Side of W.Va.

When pictures of West Virginia land in the national spotlight, it’s often the rural poverty stricken hollows and hills. Concord University art student Sterling Snyder wanted to capture a different, and often overlooked urban places in the state.

A competition on Concord University’s campus sprang folks into walking more than 42-million steps … the equivalent of going across the United States almost 6 ½ times.  The Spring Wellness Walking Challenge was organized by students, faculty and staff as a way to encourage more activity and better wellness on campus.

  Black flies could be abundant in southern West Virginia this year due to a lack of funding for a state spraying program. The state generally sprays a bacterium called Bti along the Bluestone, Greenbrier and New rivers from mid-March to October control the black fly population. The bacterium kills black fly larvae. Black fly coordinator Betsy Reeder tells The Register-Herald that the program used up a lot of its funding in 2013 because of a rainy summer.

Patriot Coal

Patriot Coal plans to cut production at two mining complexes in southern West Virginia and potentially lay off workers.Patriot announced today that it has issued 60-day layoff notices to workers at its Wells mining complex near Wharton and its Corridor G complex near Danville. 

The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, Act requires companies to provide notice to employees if large layoffs are possible.
