The West Virginia office of Rural Health will receive nearly $200,000 in federal funding intended to help workforce development and provider placement in rural, underserved areas.

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin said in a press release Thursday he hopes the grant will improve access to healthcare for rural communities throughout West Virginia.

According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, it would take 25 percent more providers than are currently available in West Virginia to meet the state’s rural healthcare needs.

Along with several other senators, Joe Manchin introduced legislation Tuesday designed to help addiction recovery centers across the state.

The Budgeting for Opioid Addiction Treatment Act, or Life BOAT, will place a 1 cent fee on each milligram of opioid-based drugs. Manchin said it’s been estimated that will create $1.5 to $2 billion a year.

Three West Virginia fire departments will receive more than $887,000 in federal grants for equipment upgrades.

U.S. Sens. Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin announced the grants Monday from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Six West Virginia health centers will soon receive millions of federal dollars to help fund renovations.  

Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin announced the funding Monday. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, the 5.3 million dollars in grants will help almost 11,000 patients in need. The funding will be used to renovate and update facilities in order to accommodate more patients and increase access to care.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton made her second West Virginia stop Tuesday morning on the campus of the University of Charleston. Clinton hosted a roundtable discussion focused on the state’s substance abuse epidemic. But she said it’s not just West Virginia that’s suffering.

“We have to treat this as an epidemic,” Clinton said. “This is a public health challenge.”

Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito introduced Jessie’s Law Wednesday.

The legislation is inspired by Jessie Grubb. Jessie’s father David Grubb shared Jessie’s story of heroin addiction with President Barack Obama when the President visited Charleston in October. The President was in West Virginia to host a town hall discussion about the opioid epidemic.

A Tomblin news release says executives from Energy Corporation of America and MarkWest Energy Partners joined for the meeting Friday in New York City.

The Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2015 includes amendments were offered up by Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore-Capito of West Virginia that aim to help coal be a competitive energy source into the future.

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin has endorsed Jim Justice in the West Virginia gubernatorial race.

Justice's campaign announced the endorsement Wednesday.

Justice, the owner of The Greenbrier resort and several coal companies, is running in the May 10 Democratic primary against former U.S. attorney Booth Goodwin and state Senate Minority Leader Jeff Kessler.

“There are three extremely capable candidates in the Democratic race for Governor, but I believe that Jim Justice is uniquely qualified to handle the major challenges that West Virginia is facing," said Sen. Manchin in a Wednesday news release.

On national television Sunday, Clinton declared she was going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business. It provided a soundbite for Republicans who made historic gains in Appalachia running against President Barack Obama's energy policies.

Select Head Start programs in the state are about to receive some financial help.


Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito announced more $1.8 million in funding today for head start programs in the state.

Sen. Joe Manchin says legislation he's introducing would create an enforceable program for states to oversee the disposal of coal ash.

The West Virginia Democrat has introduced the bill with a Republican Senate colleague. The proposal is scheduled for a hearing Tuesday before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.
