Ex-Mingo Prosecutor Pleads Guilty in Federal Case

A former Mingo County prosecutor has pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge.
 
     Michael Sparks entered the plea Monday in U.S. District Court in Charleston. He faces a year in prison when he's sentenced Feb. 24.
 
     Sparks resigned in October after being charged in a scheme to protect former Sheriff Eugene Crum from revelations that Crum bought drugs.
 
     Crum was shot to death in April in an unrelated attack as he ate lunch in his vehicle.

Mingo seeks new prosecutor, commissioner

The Mingo County Commission is expected to name a new county prosecutor and county commissioner this week.

Former prosecutor Michael Sparks and former Commissioner David Baisden resigned in October after they were charged in separate cases stemming from a corruption probe.
 
WSAZ-TV  reports that the commission interviewed candidates to replace Sparks and Baisden on Monday. Commissioners plan to name a new prosecutor and magistrate at their meeting on Wednesday.

Charges brought against Mingo Co. magistrate, prosecutor

Federal informations released Wednesday by the U.S. Attorney's Office charge former Mingo County Chief Magistrate Dallas Toler and Mingo County Prosecutor Michael Sparks in separate cases. They are the latest charges in a string of federal indictments in Mingo County, recently leading to guilty pleas from a circuit judge and county commissioner.
