Gov. Jim Justice says more than $6.6 million in grants will provide backup power generators for water and wastewater treatment plants and systems in nine West Virginia counties.

Justice announced the funds Thursday in response to the 2016 floods that killed 23 people statewide and ravaged homes, businesses, schools and infrastructure.

Seventeen health science graduate students from across West Virginia are getting money to help pay for their education.

Why? Because the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission has awarded some health sciences grad students a chunk of cash to help pay for their college education – so long as they commit to practicing medicine in a rural or underserved community in West Virginia following graduation.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Friday it will award $144 million in grants across the country to prevent and treat opioid addiction. But West Virginia won’t see any of it.

Several organizations throughout Appalachia will see federal grant money. Funds are designed to help strengthen coal-impacted economies.

 

The Appalachian Regional Commission announced nearly $2 million additional dollars this week for regions in Appalachia that have been affected by job losses related to the declining coal industry.

Federal funding has been awarded to two airport authorities in West Virginia. U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin made the announcement Friday.

Over $730,000 will be awarded to the Mingo County Airport Authority in Williamson and to the Central West Virginia Regional Airport Authority in Charleston.

U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin announced West Virginia University will receive an almost $420,000 grant designed to help train more specialized nurses.

The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources and aims to train more specialized nurses in primary care. According to Teresa Ritchie, the Coordinator for the WVU School of Nursing, there are a total of 2,000 Advanced Practice Registered Nurses in West Virginia and 220,000 nurse practitioners in the country.

The Local Foods, Local Places partnership is a yearly federal award to communities around the country to help integrate local food strategies into economic development efforts. The award was given to six Appalachian communities in 2016, including one in West Virginia.

The initiative started in 2014 as part of the White House Rural Council’s work to support communities that want to make local foods a stronger part of the local economy. There are now 60 Local Foods, Local Places partnerships across the country. More than a third are in Appalachia, including four in West Virginia.

Marshall and West Virginia universities have partnered to support health-related research projects through a new grant program. Each university has pledged $250,000 a year for three years, which will eventually total $1.5 million.

The grant program, which was announced in August, is designed to support research to “better serve West Virginians,” and to attract future funding from outside sources, according to a Wednesday press release.

Two colleges in West Virginia will receive federal grants to help students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds succeed in higher education.The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded $23.4 million to more than 100 institutions in 36 states. That's in addition to $270 million for 968 institutions in similar grants announced a month ago.

Four of America’s Civil War battlefields will receive grants to help preserve their land.

  Wheeling Jesuit University has received a $172,000 grant to show teachers how to integrate technology into their lessons.

The grant will be used to offer a professional development program called e-TechTeach.

In addition to using technology, e-TechTeach educates teachers on an instructional method called flipped learning. The flipped learning method involves presenting lesson material through video. Class time is spent working on activities that promote thinking skills.
