Some West Virginia lawmakers say they'll introduce legislation intended to better protect children from sex abuse following a task force report indicating one in 10 are victims before they turn 18.

The group's recommendations include training all public school personnel to recognize and respond to suspected abuse and clarifying the state's mandatory reporting laws.

News reports say a West Virginia prosecutor has dropped domestic violence charges against "America's Got Talent" winner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr.

Murphy was charged in July with domestic battery and domestic assault after his girlfriend reported he struck her in the face with a golf club, slammed her on the ground and banged her head into the sidewalk following an argument.

West Virginia law bars domestic abusers from having guns, but gun safety groups say more can be done.

In 2000, West Virginia made it illegal for people convicted of misdemeanor domestic abuse to have a gun. In 2012, the state began requiring that domestic violence protective orders ban respondents from having guns.

Police say an officer fatally shot a man in a Charleston, West Virginia, suburb after the man fired a gun at him.

Nitro Police Chief Brian Oxley tells media outlets that the officer was responding to a domestic violence complaint when the shooting occurred Saturday night.

Energy Committees Now Have Major Legislative Status

At the legislature today, the senate re-visited West Virginia’s Medical Liability Act to add another health care position to the list of professions protected by a cap on malpractice awards.   We’ll meet the new chairs of the Energy Committees in both houses.  Once minor committees, these now have a new status at the legislature.  And we’ll give you a preview of tonight’s television documentary about children in poverty on The Legislature Today. 

The House Judiciary Committee is struggling with the definition of the word “strangling” as it relates to domestic violence and sexual offense laws.

McDowell native Sabrina Shrader is featured in the new West Virginia Public Broadcasting documentary, The First 1,000 Days: Investing In WV Children When It Counts. We first heard from Shrader when she shared her story in 2013 of how a program called Upward Bound provided resources that helped her to graduate from college after a difficult and abusive childhood. She was working as an Upward Bound Coordinator at Concord University. Things have changed since then.

  A federal prosecutor is holding a roundtable discussion on domestic violence and sexual assault.

U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld will conduct the meeting at the YWCA of Wheeling on Thursday afternoon.

Others expected to be in attendance include county sheriffs and prosecutors and members of violence prevention programs.

A boxing champion, Martin shares her story about surviving domestic violence.  And this weekend in Fairmont, the collections of world famous opera singer Francis Yeend go on the auction block.  Sarah Lowther Hensley tells us what the collection contains. 


Thirty West Virginians were killed as a result of domestic violence in just a year’s time during the last reporting period, between October 2012 and September 2013. It’s situation that Wyoming County native Christy Salters Martin is all too familiar with.

The six-time World Boxing Council Champion found herself fighting for her life after her former husband and manager tried to kill her. The former boxer is now sharing her story with the hopes of helping other victims.
