Author and former speechwriter for West Virginia's late U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd plans to discuss the myths and reality of the influential Senate leader next Thursday in Charleston.

David Corbin, who worked for Byrd for 16 years and another decade for other Senate leaders, wrote "The Last Great Senator: Robert C. Byrd's Encounters with Eleven U.S. Presidents".

People interested in recording oral histories can learn more at a program this week in Charleston.

Author, journalist and documentarian Eric Douglas will present a program on the topic in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center in the State Capitol Complex at 6 p.m. Thursday. The program is free and open to the public.

Mountain Stage with Larry Groce has announced three live shows for October in Charleston, including two at the Culture Center Theater on the State Capitol Grounds, and one at The Clay Center with an on-stage intimate experience.    

Tickets for events at the Culture Center Theater are $20 in advance, and $25 day of show,  MountainStage.org, and by phone at 877-987-6487, locally at Taylor Books in downtown Charleston and also at the upcoming live shows.

A new first lady doll is being added to a collection at the Culture Center in Charleston.

The doll represents Dee Caperton. It is the newest in a collection and was hand-sculpted by Washington, D.C.-based artist Ping Lau. It features Caperton in her Inaugural Ball gown.

Blenko Glass is offering a limited-edition vase commemorating West Virginia's 153rd birthday.

The state Division of Culture and History says in a news release that 153 cobalt blue and topaz vases made at Blenko in Milton are available for $54. They will be unveiled Monday during an all-day state birthday celebration at the Culture Center in Charleston.

Alt-country singer-songwriter Elizabeth Cook and West Virginia-based rockers Qiet have been added to the bill for Mountain Stage's live production Sunday, July 31 at the Culture Center Theater. As previously announced, the show will also feature  jam-grass favorites Leftover Salmon.

West Virginia is holding a state government career fair this week.

The state Division of Personnel and WorkForce West Virginia are sponsoring the event Wednesday at the Culture Center in Charleston. It is open to the public.

The Culture Center on the West Virginia Capitol Complex has been evacuated after construction crews struck a high pressure gas line. 

Metro 911 dispatchers say the leak was reported at 11:51 a.m. and the gas company is on site. Dispatchers also report that the leak occurred on the Capitol Complex across from the Exxon gas station at the corner Washington and Greenbrier Streets. The leak has been stopped and it is currently being monitored by the gas company.  

Greenbrier Street is closed from Washington Street East down to Kanawha Boulevard, including Virginia and Quarrier Streets and Franklin Avenue. 

A Bluefield man has pleaded guilty to charges that he used a public computer at the West Virginia Culture Center to access child pornography.

A new exhibit is showcasing West Virginia's role in military history.

The West Virginia Division of Culture and History says the new exhibition, "West Virginians Answering the Call," is opening Friday at the Culture Center in Charleston.

The exhibit features military uniforms, medals and insignia and arms from the West Virginia State Museum's collection and from the West Virginia National Guard.

Officials say the artifacts date from the American Revolution to Afghanistan and also include a scale model of the USS West Virginia.

I crawled out of bed this morning at 4:30. 

I'm not bragging, I had to come in to host the morning newscasts and West Virginia Morning.

But I woke up feeling good. 'It's West Virginia Day, after all' I thought to myself as I was getting ready, doing my best not to crawl back into bed and wind up late for work.

  The West Virginia Division of Culture and History is commemorating West Virginia Day with festivities in Charleston and Wheeling.

Officials say the free, public events on Friday will take place at the Culture Center in Charleston and Independence Hall in Wheeling.

The Culture Center will host a birthday celebration that includes educational activities, a speech on historic Charleston and cutting of the state's birthday cake.

Almost every year since 1936, a select group of high schools boys have attended Mountaineer Boys State, and since 1941 girls have attended Rhododendron Girls State. The week long camps, sponsored by the American Legion, focus on citizenship, leadership and patriotism. This year, Boys State focused on the nonpartisan, statewide initiative, What’s Next, West Virginia?  The young men at Boys State had a great deal to add to a conversation on positive change in West Virginia during a 45 minute discussion in Charleston.
