  City founder Alfred Beckley died on May 26, 1888. It was his 86th birthday. He was the son of John James Beckley, the first Librarian of Congress and a political ally of Thomas Jefferson. With help from President James Monroe, Alfred Beckley received an appointment to West Point.

The National Weather Service says last month was the warmest April on record in several West Virginia cities.

The weather service says Beckley, Clarksburg, Elkins and Parkersburg all set records for the average temperature during the month, while Charleston and Huntington each had their second-warmest Aprils on record.

Potential and current students at the West Virginia University Institute of Technology have gotten their first look at the school's new campus in Beckley.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports dozens of students walked around campus and toured classroom buildings and residence halls at an open house on Saturday.

The first classes at Montgomery Preparatory School in Fayette County began on January 4, 1897. It was established due to the lack of high schools in the area. Previously, most students in that region had to end their formal educations after eighth grade, or even earlier.

By World War I, there was less need for a preparatory school since many high schools had been recently established. In 1917, an attempt at converting it to a vocational school failed.

Hikers now have new grounds to trek with the opening of a trail in Beckley.

WVNS-TV reports the Grey Flat Trails, located behind the Paul Cline Memorial Soccer Field, was recently designed by Gary Moorefield.

On August 29, 1952, groundbreaking ceremonies for the West Virginia Turnpike were held in Mercer County. The state’s only toll road eventually cut driving time between Charleston and Princeton from four hours to two.

The road took less than two years to construct. Despite early plans for a four-lane highway, project costs limited the turnpike to only two lanes in most places. Still, the road was considered modern for the day.

It was first opened to traffic between Princeton and Beckley in September 1954 and then on to Charleston two months later.

The National Mine Health and Safety Academy opened at Beaver, near Beckley, on August 17, 1976. The 80-acre campus, which can accommodate 600 students, is the largest in the world devoted solely to mine safety and health.

It is the central training facility for federal mine inspectors and mine safety professionals, with a stated goal of reducing accidents and improving miners’ health and safety.

In addition to coal miners, the academy also serves those who mine sand and gravel, gold, silver, copper, uranium, and other minerals.

A doctor is spending her own money to establish needle exchange programs in Beckley.

The Register-Herald reports that Dr. Ayne Amjad, along with the help of Beckley Pharmacy owner Ali Sherwani, recently opened syringe exchange programs at the two Beckley Pharmacy locations.

Over 500 healthcare professionals and volunteers will operate a no-cost medical and dental clinic in Beckley  this week. on July 13-15, 2016.

Approximately $3 million in free health-related services will beoffered to noninsured and underinsured residents of Beckley and surrounding areas at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center July 13 – 15. The event is organized by Your Best Pathway to Health, a service of Adventist-Laymen's Services & Industries, in partnership with the Seventh-day Adventist Church and many other entities.

Authorities are searching for an inmate who escaped from a police transport van along the West Virginia Turnpike and then allegedly stole a car.

Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler says in a news release that 37-year-old Paul Ira Hopkins of Smithers was handcuffed and wearing ankle shackles when he got the van's door open and jumped over a guardrail Wednesday near the North Beckley Toll Plaza.

Beckley Common Council has voted to approve demolition of several Neville Street buildings within the historic district.

The Register-Herald reports the council approved Tuesday night a property owners' request to demolish the four buildings.

A federal jury has ruled in favor of a Vienna man who sued a mortgage company for refusing to investigate issues he raised about his credit report.

Lisa Armes, a Century 21 First Choice real estate agent, tells the Register-Herald that she has been receiving calls for the past six months about properties in the area from local clients and those as far away as California.

An organization has created a mobile app that will give people self-guided tours of a 44-mile scenic byway near Beckley.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that the Paint Creek Scenic Trails Association has created the app to give people access to 10 audio pieces with information on the Paint Creek Scenic Byway.

An ice business north of Beckley went up in flames, requiring three crews to extinguish the blaze.

The Register-Herald reports Home City Ice caught fire around 9 a.m. Monday, and all employees were evacuated safely.

In southern West Virginia, The Movement Entertainment Group has hosted an awards ceremony for the past four years.  It’s part of the DubV Fest, a weekend music festival like Floyd Fest, Clifftop or Bonnaroo. Only it’s held indoors, usually at a nightclub, and features mostly hip-hop artists from out of state.
